all for the love of s'mores

Groceries bought. List ready to be checked, forecast golden. We were ready to go camping after the 4th. What we weren't expecting was to wake up the morning of the 4th with a stuffy, congested, coughing 10 month old. I was hoping it was just a morning thing, but as the day progressed and he wasn't getting better I felt our camping trip was doomed. Add the huge list of honey-do's that Jeff had to complete by a tight deadline and things were pretty much final. I think Jeff was relieved that it wasn't completely on him to cancel our plans. We both agreed camping with a sick Brody was out of the question. So with a fridge full of camping fair and my heart set on s'mores, we decided to bring a little bit of camping to us.

We started out with breakfast burritos on the patio. And I'm not going to lie, as fun as it is to cook over a campfire, the convenience of the stove top and dishwasher for quick clean up, pretty nice! And they tasted just as good. While Jeff worked on our water feature and fire pit, Brody got some pool time and I  got some red stripe time.

We took a lunch break and had Jeff's requested cheddar bratwursts. Not cooked on a stick over a fire but the grill does a pretty good job too.
Jeff worked hard all day in the boiling heat. Brody and I tried to keep him company as much as the heat allowed. I even squeezed in some reading time while Brody slept. Jeff didn't hesitate to put me to work when he saw me sitting cozy in the shade, which I actually didn't mind. Now I can actually say I helped with the fire pit. We were counting down the seconds until we could sit down around our fire and roast mallows. But of course, dinner comes first. I would've totally skipped straight to dessert, but we are setting an example for our son...right? So we grilled up some deer burgers for din din and again ate our meal outside. Brody was a little too distracted with all the noises and things to see, not to mention he sat  at the perfect height for Remi kisses.

At last it was time. Brody was sound  asleep in his crib and Jeff was finally content with the finished product.

Drumroll please......the first fire in our new fire pit!!!!

And no fire is complete without S'mores

They were seriously delicious. And even though we weren't in the mountains with our friends, the backyard came in to a pretty close second. After all, life is what you make of it right? And this weekend for us, that was bringing some of our camping traditions to our backyard.
